Key Figures

Here is a list of things we have complied for our selected KEY FIGURES, the figures we think represent the “unsung heroines” of the Modernist movement. For each figure, you will see:

  • A photograph
  • Dates she lived
  • Important facts/greatest contributions to the period
  • Major works – this is simply a small selection of works that we think are the most important, not an exhaustive list. Click the links to see how to find or access the text through UM Libraries.
  • Known Associates – these are lists of other prominent figures of the modernist period that the key figure is known to have had a relationship with, whether romantic, friendly, artistic, or professional. Notice that many of the figures we have chosen to cover knew and worked with each other! Click the links, when available, to jump to the other KEY FIGURE in this guide.
  • Further Reading – we have included a few good resources for either literary criticism or biographical information for each figure. These are good resources to start with that we have personally reviewed, but remember to use the databases and journals to find plenty more great articles and biographies!
  • Primary Sources – when possible, we have provided information about where the physical collection of original manuscripts, letters, and books are kept.
  • Audio clips – for some authors, we have provided links to audio clips of the person reciting poetry or speaking, just for fun and to help you get to know these women a little better!
  • Photo Gallery -most of the images are retrieved from the rare collections. We recommend you take advantage of the rich & original resources by visiting rare collections either digitally or in person.
