Special Collections

Special Collections is a great resource for your research on Modernist women: the University of Michigan owns many rare books (and other items) relevant to Modernist women. Schedule a visit with Special Collections if you would like to take a look at any of these works.

Special Collections resources are building-use only so you will need to make an appointment: to request your desired material, you will need to sign in to the Special Collections website (here is the library’s page on how to sign up). If you have a UM account and have not used Special Collections before, all you will need to do is sign in here and accept the library’s terms and conditions.

You can then search Mirlyn specifically for resources in Special Collections – go to the “Advanced” search page, set the desired location to “Special Collections,” and search by the name of the author or the title of the work you’re most interested in.

After you’ve found a resource in Mirlyn, click the gray “request this” button (to the right of the object’s call number). You will then be taken to the Special Collections item request page, which will auto-fill with your request: you can then enter you desired visit date and submit your request.

MLibrary owns first editions (the first set of copies from a book’s original print run) of many of the works of the Modernist women examined in this guide. First editions are an exciting way to get to know a text in even greater depth: you can see what it looked like when it was originally published (cover art, layout, how the author was presented) and get a better idea of the author’s and the editor’s intentions in publishing a given work. Search using Mirlyn to see what you can find!
